When the massive ship passed by Pi this was a huge crushing blow for him. The fact that he was so close to human life must have been such a horrible let down for him, I could only imagine. However, Pi was able to get over this blow because he was happy enough to have Richard Parker still. Richard Parker became his friend and companion and kept him going.

The massive ship passing Pi left him feeling lower than ever. Because he was certain that his rescue was near but the huge oil tank ignored his flare and cries for help. Pi declared his love for Richard Parker and promised that he would spend the remainder of his days trying to find land for the two of them so that they may be saved. -Simster.

When the cargo ship passed right by Pi, he could not believe it. He shot up a flare to try and show that he was there, however, he had so much anxiety that instead of shooting the flare in front of the cabin, he hit the side of the boat. When the boat never stopped, he still had Richard Parker which kept him happy. Richard Parker is his companion and he has a deep bond with him.

When the massive ship passed by Pi, it made him lose even more hope. He was so close to being able to talk to someone else and possibly getting rescued. Luckily Pi had Richard Parker with him who kept him from going crazy. If Richard Parker was not with him Pi probably would have killed himself. Pi loved Richard Parker and was determined to find land so they could both be saved. -PB

I agree with PB, Pi was filled with so much hope of being rescued when he saw the ship. It seemed almost impossible for a ship coming straight for his lifeboat to miss it. Pi's excitment of soon being able to relive his previous life was taking away within minutes when the boat disappeared into the distance. His spirit was crushed. However Richard Parker helps him recover from such an unbelievable event. Richard Parker not only gave him company but gave him hope as well. Pi loves Richard Parker like a brother and wishes to save them both. His determination allows him to stay strong and not give up.

The massive ship passing by Pis life boat was a huge crush for him. To be so close to civilization but miss it by a hair is very discouraging. However, this situation gave Pi new feelings and a new goal. Pi realizes what an asset Richard Parker has been to him through their journey at sea and he does not know what he would do without him. Pi promises that he will spend the rest of his days looking for land for the two of them. I believe this goal Pi has set was a good thing. It kept him focused, he had something to work for and to occupy his time and thoughts.

As Pi sees the massive ship in front of his eyes passing him, it only leaves him heartbroken and empty handed. Since he was so close to his final destination, it was a crushed dream for the ship to pass him. At this time, he realizes Richard Parker by his side is only helping him to stay positive and to eventually reach land.

When the ship passed by Pi, he was in such disbelief. The chance for a rescue had slipped right through his hands and there was nothing he could do about it accept sit and watch as the ship motored on away. After the ship was gone and out of sight, Pi looks over at Richard Parker: his companion and best friend, and felt relief. He still had Richard Parker and for him that was good enough and that enabled Pi to continue surviving on the lifeboat.

When Pi's only chance of escaping the lifeboat slips through his fingers, he reacts quite unexpectedly. Instead of showing his emotions of defeat and anger, Pi admits his love to Richard Parker, who sulks over the passing ship. Pi pleads how happy and grateful he is to have Richard Parker on board with him. He also tells Richard Parker to not lose hope, an idea that is hard to think of after watching your chance of survival pass you by.

Pi was utterly devastated when the oil tanker passed him. His efforts to attract the ship were completely in vain. However, when the ship passed him, it made him realized how important Richard Parker was to him. He proclaims his love for him and is newly determined to get Richard Parker to dry land.

I agree with Kebo when she says that when the ship passes by it crushed his dreams of surviving. But it also inforced the fact that he loves Richard Parker. They need each other to survive and he feels that he definitly would have died if he did not have Richard Parker. He was certain that he was going to be rescued but when the ship passes unknowingly by him, this was a blow to his heart.

I agree with Kebo and Sarah Fishsticks. Seeing a ship was something monumental for Pi, it could have been the thing that saved him. Pi was so overwhelmed at the sight of a ship that he professed his love for Richard Parker and told him that he would find them land so they could be saved. It was devestating when the ship did not stop because along with the ship went Pi and Richard Parker's survival. He knew that his shot at life just passed him by.

When the massive steel oil tanker passed by Pi he got his hopes up and started yelling at the top of his loungs, blowing his whistle and shooting off flares. However, the ship did not notice him. He felt lower than ever, but he quickly got over it. He still had Richard Parker to keep him company. He loved RIchard Parker and even said so and spent the rest of his days trying to find land and concetrating on surviving.

When the huge oil tanker simply pushes Pi's life boat aside and rushes past him without even noticing him, Pi's feeling of hope of being saved is crushed. Pi recovers from this event by declaring his love for Richard Parker and stating that he would be hopeless without him. He also makes a deal with Richard Parker that someday he will find them land. Pi almost forces himself to not give up by making this deal with Richard Parker. He feels as though he has to carry out the deal that he will find land for them, and that is why he won't give up and just let himself die.
