The Purpose of this chapter is to show the two sides of Pi. At first Pi was a Peace-loving vegetarian but now after the time being on the lifeboat he has become a carnivorous salior. For example, Pi nows eats everything of the animals he gets, he eats every single piece in there body. This makes him a carnivor and being on the lifeboat at see makes him a salior. That is why Pi is a carnivorous salior. It might be seen as the transition from land to sea for Pi. On land he was a vegetarin but at sea he is a carnivor. -Merlin
Pi was forced to become a carnivorous sailor because he was stuck out in the ocean and could not find his way back. His only choice was to eat meat or else he would not be able to eat at all. The only food available to him was animals. When he was on land he had the choice to be a vegetarian. -PB
I believe that the purpose of this chapter is to show the mental effects the voyage on the lifeboat are having on Pi. It shows that his mental state is gradually deteriorating. He believes that he is talking to a tiger and rather than questioning how it is he can be talking to an animal he wonders why the tiger has a French accent. The conversation in this chapter shows that Pi is losing his sanity even though the situation happens to be real. - Le Tigre
Chapter 90 is the battle inside Pi's mind between the self he once knew and the self he is now. Pi has always been a "peace-loving vegetarian," but do to his recent situation, he has converted to animalistic ways in the way he eats and acts. For example, Pi says in Chapter 82, "...how low I had sunk the day I noticed, with a pinching of the heart, that I ate like an animal, that this noisy, frantic, unchewing wolfind-down of mine was eactly the way Richard Parker ate" (Martel 225). During his hallucination, Pi is overcome by emotions and begins to battle himself. He is unsure of who he is know and what he truly wants to be. He seems to be diappointed in his "canirvourous" behaivor, but it is the only thing that can help him survive.
Chapter 90 is the battle inside Pi’s mind illustrated with two different characters or two different voices. The purpose of this chapter is to shows Pi’s desperation in finding who he is and what lies in his future. He wonders if he can still be the “peace-loving vegetarian,” or due to his recent circumstances and things he had to do in order to survive, will he become a carnivorous sailor, destined out to sea for all eternity. Pi notices the change in his behavior when he says, “…how I had sunk the day I noticed, with a pinching of the heart, that I hate like an animal, that noisy, frantic, unchewing wolfing down of mine was exactly the way Richard Parker ate” (Martel 225). During Pi’s hallucination, he is struggling between who he was at what he is now. The conversation shows readers how desperate Pi’s situation has gotten.
This quote expresses to the reader that Pi is still in tune with reality. Pi did not forget about his family and those who are indeed important to him. By singing "Happy Birthday" to his mother, it shows that Pi has not yet lost hope for survival. Pi is looking at the positives and not the negativies.
I agree with the princess. Pi has quite the internal conflict with himself in chapter 90. He is stuck between his "peace-loving vegetarian" self and his carnivorous, animalistic self. He doesn’t know what to do. He would love to continue to be a vegetarian, however his current situation doesn’t allow it.
The purpose of this chapter is to show how Pi has changed. Pi started out as a vegetarian and would have never in his wildest dreams have eaten an animal. However, now after being exposed to hunger for such a long period of time he changed and became carnivorous. In the chapter he is compared to Richard Parker and it says that the way Pi behaves is not much different from Richard Parker. He eats all the parts of the animal that he can.
