Pi's amazement with life in this quote is very simple. He believes that some things in life are so grand and so marvelous that you can not simply think of the moment. You're mind wanders on a ginormous scale, to that of the lengths of the universe. He uses opposites to express just how large your thinking spans, from one topic to the complete opposite. You clear the whole board with your mind and all because of one great instant that took your breath away and left you stunned.
I agree with Beta. The mind is a very powerful thing that can transition from one thought to another at the drop of a dime. Pi uses opposites to describe his emotions. Something such as lightening that could give such terror provided such wonder for Pi. I have undoubtedly felt the same way. I many times think of how large the universe is and how minute my problems seem in comparison to it. It scares me, but the thought it still rather amazing.
I agree with Beta and Snoop Dog is that Pi seems to be amazed with life. The more Pi stares into the storm with the lightening, makes him become more child like in his astonishment. I would think that he would be scared to see such a storm but in the face of danger, he finds peace.
