During his time at sea, Pi see's many animals including whales, dolphins, birds, and sharks. He did not necessarily see these animals as prey. When he first sees a whale up so close, he is amazed. He believed that they understood his condition and went to tell other ships of his conditions. Pi likened the dolphins to old friends who came around to see him a lot. As for the birds, at first he thought that they brought news of land, and looked at them in wonder, but that wonder soon passed and he killed one. He was amazed byt he different shapes and colors of all of the sharks, and even took to catching some.
Pi was able to find a connection between himself and the animals he came across at see. Like lil wayne states, he thought the whales went off to send help to the boy, stranded in the Pacific. I think another appreciation the Pi shows for the array of animals he comes across is from his childhood. He grew up in his father's zoo, this developed his love and adrimation for a variaty of animals. I think he felt a connection with the different animals he saw, much like the slew of animals that can be found in a zoo. -Flo' Rida
Pi sees many animals at sea. However, he sees many of the mammals and birds not as prey. He sees them in a different light. He sees them as such beautiful creatures in which he cannot harm. They were like a little bit of hope, because he knew of these animals and their upbringing locations. He knew that if there were birds around that there must be land somewhere nearby. It was like a little bit of hope that he had.
Pi was very observate of the animals in his suroundings. Despite his desperate hope of surviving not all of these animals were viewed as prey. Some of the animals that aren't viewed as prey are birds, whales, dolphins and sharks. His awareness of these animals could have been because of his zoo life and animal history. He was smart enough to realize that if there are birds then he must bec pretty close to lann and this gave him hope of surviving.
