I agree with Iceberg in that the orange whistel that Pi finds keeps him from certin death. This is the object that keeps Ricahrd Parker at bay and if it were to be lost Pi would soon die at the Paws of Ricahrd Parker. After the storm passed, many of the rations that Pi had saved up had been destroyed. Even parts of the tarpaulin were torn from Richard Parker. After losing all this, it's the last of the orange whistles that is keeping Pi from death. This is because the orange whistle is what helps to train and maintain order with Richard Parker. It wasn't just the food that Pi gave to Richard Parker that helped him to survive with the tiger, and it wasn't just the water rations. The loud "tweet!" of the orange whistle kept Pi from becoming the submissive in the situation.
During the storm, much of Pi's supplies were lost due to unfortunate weather. Although, what keeps him from a certain death is the orange whistle. The whistle enables him to still have some control of Richard Parker. Pi feels that without the whistle there would just be death for him because there would be no way to control Richard Parker and show that he is in control. Pi believes needs the whistle in order to survive.
Pi showed immense deterioration in every aspect of his being. He became physically feeble and did not have much control of his body anymore. His body became very sore and covered in boils at one point, he was also temporarily blind. As far as his mental being goes, his was not good. He became so disoriented that he ate Richard Parker's feces. Being in essential solitude without any communication drove him mad. Things he would ordinarily never even consider doing were no longer a big deal to him at all.
I agree that the orange whistle is one of the only things that keeps him from death. He uses it wisely to escape death from Richard Parker. He trains the tiger to respond to when he hears the whistle that is why it is so important that he still has it, so he has control over the tiger. He found that the water hadn't spilled because the solar stills and net had protected them but the defining moment for him that he would be able to survive was when he caught the orange whistle before it was washed overboard.
