Chapters 87-91 represent extreme anguish for Pi and Richard Parker. Pi is tired from all the sun, the sun is starting to cause major problems for him. The sun is making his clothes deteriorate causing him to get burns and sores. In order to cool off from the sun Pi uses a "dream rag" which causes Pi to fall asleep right under the sun. Pi also finds a refrigerator that has spoiled meat inside. Pi is so desperate for help that he even writes a letter and places it inside a glass bottle hoping someone would find it. Even though finding a bottle is harder then spotting a boat it was worth a shot. Pi and Richard Parker also suffer by losing their sight.
One of the worst moments in Chapters 87 through 91 was reading Pi’s last diary entry. It is clear that Pi is at his lowest point and is feeling that he is reaching the point death. Pi says, “It’s no use. Today I die. I will die today. I die. This was my last entry. I went on from there, endured, but without noting it. Do you see these invisible spirals on the margins of the page? I thought I would run out of paper. It was the pen that ran out” (Martel 240). Pi is running out of supplies and is also running out of hope. Pi has always been a character with immense drive and passion for his beliefs and convictions. To see a strong character falling was one of the biggest displays of Pi’s anguish in the novel thus far.
I agree with Princess' answer. The point at which Pi has hit his most depressing moment is when he is writing his last journal entry. Princess also states that like his supplies, Pi has run out of hope as well. As each moment passes him by, he becomes closer and closer to his demise. One of the items that had kept him sane throughout his journey thus far was his notebook, and like so many other things in Pi's life, it has come to its bitter and sad end. - Blue Steel
During this section of the novel "Life of Pi", Pi experiences the most difficult trials thus far. However, I believe the worst moment during Pi's journey is in chapter 87 when Pi states, "It’s no use. Today I die. I will die today. I die. This was my last entry. I went on from there, endured, but without noting it. Do you see these invisible spirals on the margins of the page? I thought I would run out of paper. It was the pen that ran out” (Martel 240). Pi comes to reality and realizes that the supplies are running low and because of this his body is deteriorating from the lack of nutrient and water. Pi, a previously strong character, has now given up hope and completely accepted the fact that he will not survive. The most anguish Pi has experienced this far is the moment he gave up. CEM
Some of the anguish experienced and to befall Pi on the lifeboat included the sun-bleach of the raft and the effect of wearing out of parts of the raft due to the weather.Pi 's clothes were burnt off, there was a cumin smell set off by the sun, his eyes started to ooze puss and almost blinded him and the heat weakened him. I can say that chapters 87-91 were dramatic chapters showing the great ordeals and appalling conditions poor Pi had to go throughwith the chance of dying, but at the end survived.
